Pre-Spawn Bass on Lake Guntersville

Lake Guntersville largemouth bass are transitioning from winter patterns to pre-spawn staging as surface temperatures push into the mid-50s. Bass are holding on secondary points, channel swings, and the edges of remaining hydrilla in 5 to 12 feet of water. Larger females are beginning to move toward spawning flats but have not committed yet.

The 69,000-acre reservoir is fishing well across the main lake and in the creek arms. Brown Creek, Short Creek, and North Sauty Creek are all producing pre-spawn fish. Water clarity is running 2 to 4 feet of visibility depending on recent rainfall.

What's Working

  • Lipless crankbaits (1/2 oz Red Craw) burned over grass tops in 4 to 8 feet
  • Jerkbaits (suspending, natural shad colors) on channel points in 8 to 12 feet
  • Alabama rigs slow-rolled along channel swings and ledges
  • Jig-and-craw (3/8 oz green pumpkin) on secondary points with rock transitions
  • Chatterbaits over submerged grass in 5 to 10 feet on warmer afternoons

Dock Fishing at Guntersville Getaway

Guntersville Getaway guests are catching bass from the private dock and boathouse in the sheltered cove. The cove warms faster than the main lake, which pulls pre-spawn fish into the shallows earlier. Drop a shaky head or Ned rig along the dock pilings and the boat lift structure for consistent bites in the 2 to 5 pound range.
