State Park Beach & Boating Season
Lake Guntersville State Park opens its beach complex for the summer season in June. The sandy beach area on the north side of the park provides a designated swimming area with lifeguards, picnic pavilions, and restroom facilities. The park also operates pontoon boat, kayak, and canoe rentals from the marina, giving visitors access to the scenic backwaters and islands on the north end of the lake.
The 6,000-acre state park offers 36 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, zip-line courses, an 18-hole golf course, and the resort lodge with lake-view dining. The campground and cabins fill quickly for summer weekends — book early. Pontoon and kayak rentals are also available at independent marinas near Town Harbor and along Highway 431. Visit our Lake Guntersville attractions guide for a complete list of summer activities near the property.
Swimming from the Guntersville Getaway Dock
Guntersville Getaway guests can swim directly from the private dock in a calm, sheltered cove. The dock features handrail steps that descend into the water for easy and safe entry. The cove is protected from main-lake boat traffic and wind chop, creating a natural swimming area ideal for families with children. Water temperatures in June range from 75 to 82 degrees — perfect for an afternoon dip after a morning on the boat. Floats and pool noodles are available at the property for guests to use on the water.
Cathedral Caverns — 60-Degree Underground Escape
Cathedral Caverns State Park, a 30-minute drive from Guntersville Getaway in Woodville, Alabama, reaches peak season in June. The cavern maintains a constant 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it the perfect escape when surface temperatures climb into the 90s. This is one of the largest cave openings in the world — 126 feet wide and 25 feet high — with massive formations inside including a stalagmite forest, flowstone formations, and a cave pool.
The guided walking tour takes approximately 90 minutes along a paved, well-lit path. Daily tours run throughout the summer and are suitable for all ages. The surrounding state park includes picnic areas, nature trails, and a gemstone mining sluice that kids enjoy. Cathedral Caverns is one of the top family attractions near Lake Guntersville and a must-do on any summer trip to the area.
Early Morning Topwater Bass Bite
The June topwater bite on Lake Guntersville is explosive. With water temperatures in the 75 to 82 degree range, bass push baitfish against grass lines, docks, and rocky banks in 2 to 8 feet of water during the low-light periods. The first hour of daylight is consistently the most productive window. Walk-the-dog baits, poppers, and hollow-body frogs produce violent surface strikes before 8 AM that are the most exciting fishing of the year.
By mid-morning, bass retreat to deeper structure — submerged grass edges, channel ledges, and brush piles in 10 to 18 feet. The offshore bite requires electronics to locate schools of bass suspended over structure. Deeper hydrilla edges along the main river channel and the mouths of major creek arms hold concentrations of fish through the heat of the day.
What's Working in June
- Topwater walking baits (Zara Spook, bone or chrome) at dawn along grass edges and rocky points in 2 to 4 feet
- Poppers (white or chartreuse) worked slowly over submerged grass in the first 30 minutes of daylight
- Hollow-body frogs (black or white) over matting grass in backwater pockets for explosive blowups
- Buzzbaits (white, 3/8 oz) over submerged grass in low-light conditions for reaction strikes
- Deep-diving crankbaits (shad colors) on main-lake ledges and channel swings in 12 to 18 feet during midday
- Swim jigs (bluegill pattern) through sparse grass on secondary points where bass stage between shallow and deep
Best Fishing Times in June
The summer heat concentrates the best fishing into the low-light windows. First light through 8 AM produces the strongest topwater bite. The midday hours from 10 AM to 4 PM require deeper presentations on offshore structure. Late afternoon from 6 PM until dark brings a second topwater window as bass move shallow again to feed. Guntersville Getaway guests can fish the private dock at dawn and dusk without ever leaving the property — a major advantage during the summer pattern.
