Pre-Spawn Bass Transition on Lake Guntersville

February is the transitional month on Lake Guntersville. Water temperatures climb from the mid-40s early in the month to the low 50s by month's end, triggering largemouth bass to begin repositioning from deep winter haunts toward shallower spawning areas. Bass stage on secondary points, channel swings, and the outer edges of creek arms in 6 to 14 feet of water, using these structures as highways between their winter holding areas and eventual spawning flats.

The key to February fishing is finding warmer water. Protected creek arms on the north side of the lake and dark-bottom pockets warm first after sunny days. A two-degree rise in surface temperature can activate fish that were lethargic the day before. Focus on areas where channels swing close to spawning flats — bass use these as staging corridors between deep and shallow water.

Guntersville's massive hydrilla beds also begin to show signs of early growth in February, especially in shallow, sun-warmed bays. Bass that will eventually spawn on these grass flats begin gathering on the nearest deep structure, waiting for consistently warm days before committing shallow.

What's Working in February

  • Jerkbaits (suspending, shad colors) twitched on channel points and grass edges in 8 to 14 feet
  • Jig-and-craw (3/8 oz brown or green pumpkin) on secondary points with rock and gravel
  • Blade baits ripped off channel swings and deep points during cold snaps
  • Lipless crankbaits (1/2 oz) ripped through emerging hydrilla on warming days
  • Ned rigs and small swimbaits on finesse presentations for pressured fish

Winter Crappie Still Producing

Winter crappie fishing remains excellent through February on Lake Guntersville. Crappie hold in deep creek channels and near brush piles at 15 to 30 feet, gradually shifting shallower as the month progresses and water temperatures warm. Vertical jigging with hair jigs, small tubes, and minnows continues to produce slabs in the 1 to 2 pound class. The transition period in late February can produce some of the best crappie catches of the winter as fish begin moving toward prespawn staging areas.

Race to the Cave at Cathedral Caverns State Park

The Race to the Cave half marathon, 10K, and 5K takes runners through the scenic trails and roads surrounding Cathedral Caverns State Park in Woodville, Alabama, about 25 minutes east of Guntersville. The course winds through forested terrain with rolling hills and finishes near the entrance to Cathedral Caverns — one of the largest commercial cave openings in the world at 126 feet wide and 25 feet tall.

The event typically falls in mid-February and draws trail runners and road racers from across the Southeast. Spectators are welcome at the start/finish area, and a guided tour of Cathedral Caverns pairs well with race weekend. Guntersville Getaway provides a comfortable base camp for runners and their families, with the lake just 25 minutes from the starting line.

Bald Eagles Still Active — Fledglings Visible in Nests

By mid-February, many of the bald eagle nests along the Tennessee River corridor have hatched. Eagle fledglings are visible in the massive stick nests, with adults making frequent flights to bring fish back to the nest. This is one of the best months to observe active eagle nests from the lake, as the leafless winter trees provide clear sightlines to nests that are hidden by foliage in summer.

Lake Guntersville State Park continues its Eagle Awareness programs into early February, with bus tours and raptor presentations on select weekends. From the Guntersville Getaway dock and patio, guests regularly spot eagles soaring over the cove, perching in the tall pines across the water, and swooping down to catch fish near the shoreline.
